Loch Ness Marathon 2012

Our congratulations to all those who competed in the Loch Ness Marathon. It was a wonderful day, with beautiful weather, and even Nessie appeared …

The route must be one of the most scenic in the world, starting in the picturesque village of Dores on the banks of Loch Ness.  The runners run towards Inverness, around the city and finish along either side of the River Ness coming into the Bught Park for a hero’s welcome.  Spectators lined the route to cheer everyone on no matter what time they managed and of course the dress code for runners is ‘anything goes!’.  To enter the marathon most runners are raising money for charity so as well as completing a physically enduring challenge, vast amounts of money are also raised for good causes.

We’ve hosted runners here many times for both the full marathon in September and also the half-marathon in March each year.  On each occasion most competitors have seemed quiet and nervous when they appear for an early breakfast on race day.  But often when they’ve chatted with other guests with varying running experience they are reassured that everyone is feeling slightly anxious at that stage.  Armed with a warming bowl of porridge inside them they leave ready to face the world.

Runners leave from here to the pick up point at the Bught Park from where they travel to Dores by coach in time for the start of the race.   And of course when they finish the race they have not far to stagger back to the b&b to relax and recover their weary bodies.

We look forward to seeing our guests who took part again, for next years Loch Ness Marathon.  If you are interested in entering any of the local races check out the Loch Ness Marathon site, where you’ll see there are events for all abilities.
